Principal’s Report

Welcome to another edition of the Hampton Park Primary School’s newsletter. Yet again we have had a very busy fortnight.

NAIDOC Week:

NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The children were on school holidays during that week so the school postponed activities until they returned. All year levels have spent time learning about the Aboriginal culture and also completed some art work using Aboriginal design techniques, a large amount of their work is on display in the library.

Cross Country:

The children in year one to six all participated in the Faction Cross Country events on Friday 20th July. It was a wonderful day the weather was perfect, with the rain holding off until the end of the day. It was terrific to see so many parents involved with the races, thank you for taking time to join in with this event. The results were outstanding with the following children finishing first, second, third or fourth for their year level.

The children from Year three upwards that finished first to third competed at Altone Park last Friday 27th July in the Interschool Cross Country. Hampton Park came 3rd place out of 7 schools. A very good effort to everyone involved.

Book Week:

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature and you will often see children's book character parades and talented librarians creating amazing displays.

Generally, the CBCA Book of the Year winner's announcement is the third Friday in August, and CBCA Book Week commences the following day. This year the children in Years K – 3 will be involved in a program called Storytime during week 5, this is where a guest speaker from Libraries WA visits the children in their classes to read to them. The children in Room 8 and 9 will be fortunate enough to meet Norman Jorgensen on the 16th August; Norman Jorgensen is one of WA’ most versatile authors for young people and has published a dozen books. His hugely popular novel The Smugglers Curse won this years’ WAYRBA and its sequel The Wreckers’ Revenge will be published soon and looks to be just as thrilling!

Week six is the big Book week Week for the school when something different is happening every day. Wednesday 22nd August the children will be asked to dress up to reflect their favourite book character, they will be parading their costumes at the end of the assembly. Parents are welcome to attend. More information will be in the next newsletter.

Voluntary Contributions:

Thank you to all the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for this year. The contributions are spread across the learning areas to provide additional resources for the children. Some examples are the extra colour paint and paper that is purchased for the Arts, please see the photos of some of the art work from room one that were looking at warm and cool colours.

We are also able to fund the on-going work in the vegetable garden, please see the photos below of some of the current growing crops. Plus many other additional resources, for example funding the bus for the interschool cross country runners. If you have yet to pay this year’s voluntary contributions please consider doing so soon. The school bank details are Account Number: 3409 14343 BSB: 016 363 and please include students name/class in the reference field.

Public Speaking Competition:

Each year at Hampton Park Primary School the children from years one to six take part in a public speaking competition. The finals of the competition will be held on Wednesday 15th August, commencing at 9am in the undercover area. Parents are invited to attend. The judges this year are Jo Carroll and Kelly Horrocks (nee Green).

School Photos:

A reminder that school photos are happening this Wednesday and Thursday. All class photos except Kindy 2 will be on the Wednesday; Kindy 2, Graduation class, Student Council and Faction Captains photos are on the Thursday. The children have been asked to wear their full school uniform on Wednesday, with the leaver’s shirt and faction shirts on the Thursday. Student Councillors and Faction Captains need to wear their badges too.

Room 4 Assembly

Room 4 hosted the assembly last week and took the audience back to the 50's Rock and Roll era.

Fonzie and his gang hit the jukebox and the students performed an instrumental version of Rock Around the Clock and Shake, Rattle and Roll, followed by the singing of the Happy Days theme song. They then topped it off with a dance performance of Jailhouse Rock. It was a fabulous performance. Congratulations to all the students for all their hard work, Mrs Cunningham for having such a great idea, Mrs Court for making the Powerpoint and Mrs Firby for making the sign and jukebox.

This term we will be beginning the STEAM Club in Week 4 on the 8th of August every Wednesday from 3.15 to 4.15pm. We are going to build our own robots, learn how to program them using coding and also work with the 3D printers.

We would like to give a very big thankyou to Mr Goddard for working with the STEAM Club for the last two years. We will miss solving his challenging problems. Mrs Farthing, is going to work with us this term along with Mrs O’Neill when she returns.

In Term 2 half of the group learnt how to code and to make their own games using Scratch. The rest of the group learnt how to make electronic circuits with our electronics kits. They made fans whirl, lights glow and alarms blare. Working on the Western Power Shockproof program they also learnt how we get electricity to our homes and how to be safe. Everyone has also created a game map using our new I Pad programmable Blue Bots.

Get ready to STEAM ahead in Term 3 STEAMERS!

We are looking for a volunteer to run the Scholastic Book Club in 2019. You will be given full handover by the current co-ordinator, who is an ex parent and been supporting this role for the past 7 years.

Book Club gives parents and children a convenient way to purchase affordable, age-appropriate books to bridge the class-to-home reading connection.

If you are interested, please see Janice in the Office.
