Principal’s Report

We were very excited last week when the brick paving containing the sponsored bricks was laid. The bricks were purchased through a fundraising activity in 2014, unfortunately they took a long time to arrive at the school and I believe there weren’t enough funds at the stage to have a pathway made. This year we made it a priority in the school budget to cover the cost to have a pathway made containing the sponsored bricks. The pathway connects an existing piece of paving with the steps to the oval. Please feel free to come and find your named bricked.

Bikes on School Grounds:

I would like to remind all students and to let new parents know that when on the schools grounds the children cannot ride their bikes/scooters/skateboard or any other object with wheels. This rule is in place for the safety of all. Please ensure your child adheres to this no matter what size the bike is. Also a reminder to the students regarding shared use of pathways to please consider others when travelling along the pathways and through the tunnel, as I have had several complaints regarding the speed some children go past pedestrians.

Moz’s Monster Music Mix:

The children were highly entertained as they listened to Moz’s Monster Music Mix last Wednesday. They learnt about the different sections of an orchestra ie; wind, strings etc. The Pre Primary children in particular enjoyed the puppet work. A big thank you to all the children who supported this incursion.

Cooking Club:

The year 3 and 4 children who attended the cooking club have had a wonderful four weeks creating and baking. They have learnt how to make sausage rolls, fruit muffins, spaghetti bolognaise and fried rice. Many thanks to Ms Owsiak and Mrs Gardner for giving up their time after school to teach our budding master chefs. The children were very enthusiastic about everything they made. Cooking club will be offered again next term to a different age group.

Zero Waste Lunchboxes

As you are all aware Hampton Park is an accredited waste wise school and we are always trying to reduce our impact on the environment. There is a way that every member of our school can help with this cause and that is by sending their children to school with Zero Waste Lunchboxes. During the month of June we will be running a competition to try and encourage people to pack Zero Waste Lunches. Everyday a child brings a Zero Waste Lunchbox he/she will get a ticket for a chance to win a no dig garden bed. The more times they have no waste in their lunchbox the greater chance they will have of winning this fabulous prize.

Some helpful hints for packing a Zero Waste Lunchbox

Don't use plastic wrap when you are putting the sandwich in the lunch box.

Pack vegetable sticks and fruit rather than packets of junk food, which are often high in sugar or salt.

Buy a large tub of yogurt and serve small portions each day.

Provide reusable drink bottles rather than juice boxes.

Most importantly talk to your children about what they want for lunch. So many children throw their lunches straight in the bin because the don't like what they have been given. The parents get the empty lunchbox back and think their child enjoyed the lunch and packs the same thing the next day. This is a huge waste of money, a huge waste going to landfill and it is not healthy for a child to eat nothing at lunchtime.

I am hoping that everyone will work together to help reduce the amount of rubbish Hampton Park Primary School sends to landfill. Remember together we can make a difference!

Mandarin News

On Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday the 20th June we will be doing cooking in our Mandarin classes. This is an incentive for students who have tried their best at learning Chinese this semester. Middle and Upper school students will be making “Shēng Cài Bāo”, more commonly known as “Sang Choi Bao” (Lettuce Wraps). The ingredients used are chicken mince, oil, aromatics, hoisin, soya and oyster sauces served in lettuce cups. Junior primary students will be treated to fried spring rolls called “Zhà Chūn Juǎn”.

Should your child have any dietary requirements and would not be able to take part in this cooking activity, please do not hesitate to contact me. In the same note, if you can spare an hour or so to help with the cooking, it would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Mrs Chiew Hoon Lee
Chinese Language Teacher

Helping Hands Network

The Helping Hands children have been very busy these past weeks extending their learning and interests. One of the things we have been learning are about how balloons can be unpredictable when another balloon is inside. We have tested this theory with normal balloons and then one with another balloons inside to see how they fall and move differently. The children even created their own indoor volley ball court.

One of the other cool activities we have been looking at is nature confetti and how we can make it so that when it is thrown it is not harmful to wildlife and the environment. To do this we have been collecting leaves and using a hole punch cutting shapes from the leaves to use as confetti, the leaves are then able to be put back outside and we have noticed some friends from the school finding them on their nature walks.

We are still collecting cans to go towards a buddy bench for the school, please put any aluminium drink cans in the green bin outside room 5 for us to recycle. We are also looking at other options for teaching the children about recycling and reusing items so if you have any ideas please let us know.

Now that we are in term 2 spaces are starting to fill up. Did you know that if your child attends an afterschool activity run by the school eg Stem, cooking or konga we can pick them up from class to attend helping hands afterwards?

Please feel free to contact us on 0428 614 999 or at hamptonpark@helpinghandsnetwork.com.au

Thank you
