Principal’s Report

With only a little over a week to go, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for the wonderful school year that was 2018. I personally have felt very welcomed into the Hampton Park Community. Tuesday 11th Dec at 8:45 we will have the Year 1 to 6 presentations and the Kindergarten and Pre Primary’s presentation is on Wednesday 12th Dec at 8:45. We would love to see as many family and friends as possible at all two presentations.

Staff Changes

As I am sure you are aware every year in schools the teaching and support staff move around. Sometimes it is just classes, other times it is schools. It is with deep regret that we are farewelling three of our staff.

Ms Katrina Merrells, who has taught here for 17 years, is changing locations and having a new beginning at East Beechboro Primary School; we wish her all the best for her future and thank her for the many years of wonderful work that she has completed at Hampton Park. Ms Merrells’s leaves behind big shoes to fill and will be missed greatly by all.

Unfortunately, the school budget doesn’t allow for the return of Mr Dan Hill or Ms Amanda Gordon next year. Again both staff have done fantastic work in their roles and made a wonderful contribution to the school. I am sure we will see both back here sometime in the future. Mrs Kolev is extending her parental leave to include all of next year and we may see her also around the school sometime doing relief work.

As you can imagine with staff leaving changes and replacements have to be found. Owing to this, I am always reluctant to advise families at the end of the year as to who their child’s teacher will be the following year as changes often happen over the holidays. Please see the following information on class lists.

Class List 2019

There are requirements from the Education Department as to the sizes of classes, there is a different ratio of teacher to child depending on the age of the children. Consequently, we often end up having to have what is referred to as a split class. Some children from one-year group and some from the next year group form the mixed classes. In 2019 we will be having a split Pre-Primary/Year One class, the parents of the Pre–Primary children that have been selected to this class will be informed in advance so they know to take their child to C1 and not the early childhood block. Please be assured that the process of allocating children to classes is completed as fairly as possible with best interest of each child in mind. As stated earlier, sometimes changes are made during the holidays and it is very hard on a child if they have been told the name of the teacher and then changes occur leaving the child very distressed. In order to avoid this occurring, class list will be placed on our web page on the 30thJanuary with paper copies being placed around the school. The lists on the web page will show the first name and the initial of the surname. The web address is below.

National Schools Opinion Survey

Thank you to everyone that completed the survey this year. We had 130 completed surveys which was a massive improvement from 2016. The information and feedback provided from the survey’s will be extremely useful with our future planning.

Thursday 13th December

This is the last day for students for 2018. During that day many events are taking place. Including a Values Day with giant water slides, please send your child with appropriate clothes for getting wet and remember school uniform to change into. After lunch the Annual Talent Show will commence at 1.30pm and finish at 2.30pm where students will return to class to be dismissed at 3pm. Parents are welcome to attend.

Report Collection

We will again distribute the students formal summative report for semester two with the same method of collecting as was carried out in semester one. The report is for the parent so we like to give the report directly to the parent. For this to occur the teachers will distribute the reports at the classroom for 15 minutes after school finishes Wednesday 12th December. If you are unable to come to the school and collect the report from the teacher there will be an opportunity to collect it from the office between 8:15am and 9:00am Thursday 13th December. Following that time, the reports will be posted home.

Christmas Wishes

Unfortunately, I have an important activity occurring on Thursday 13th December which cannot be altered to another time, so hence I will not be at the school on that day. However, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas followed by a Happy New Year. I hope you all have a safe and refreshing holiday break and return on Monday 4th February ready to commence the next school year.

Thank You Morning Tea for Parents

Last Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting a morning tea to show our appreciation of the wonderful people who support our school in so many ways. Without the work you do, we would not be able to have the wonderful school that we do. We need also to thank our terrific staff for the amazing catering.

Presentations

We would like to invite all parents to our Presentation Assemblies next week.

On Tuesday 11th December there is an assembly for students in years one to six. The year ones from Cluster 1 and 2, the school choir and the Marimba Club will be presenting items at this event. There are awards presented for Excellence and another for students who demonstrate strengths that are admirable and worthy of recognition (Meritorious).

On Wednesday 12th of December the assembly will be for the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary children. This assembly involves the Kindy children from both groups and both Pre-Primary classes. Each class will sing 3 songs from the stage and every child will be presented with a book to encourage the “Love of Reading”

Both assemblies will be held in the undercover area and will commence at 9am. We hope to see you all there.

PrePrimary Assemby

On the 28th November the Pre-Primary students in PP1 and PP2 performed their assembly item. They have been learning about the importance of exercise to ensure their bodies are strong and healthy. Every day the students have daily fitness with songs and dances. The assembly item demonstrated two of their favourite dances – the “Dino Stomp” and “Get Your Body Moving”. They performed confidently and showed lots of energy and enthusiasm. They enjoyed swishing their dinosaur tails which were very kindly made by Mrs Lowden and Mrs Cotter. Many of the students also took the opportunity to try public speaking by reading in front of the whole school! Well done to all the Pre-Primaries for an excellent performance.

Helping Hands

The children of Helping Hands have recently had a visit from the local Fire Station, we learnt about how we can make our houses safe and recognise dangerous fire situations. After a fire drill practice we had the privilege of being able to check out the fire engines and were even able to sit in the cab and have a turn on the little hose from the small truck. We learnt some really important information and got to ask some very curious questions. It was a great experience.

We would like to say a huge thank you to children, families and teachers for all your support this year, we would not have been able to accomplish all the wonderful things we have done without you. We will be continuing with all our community work over the holidays and will be coming back in the New Year with new fun ideas for program and fundraising ideas!

In the New Year we will still be collecting items for the Salvation Army Care Packages including travel sized toiletries and items for APS (Animal Protection Society) including cat litter and dog and cat food. Thank you again for everyone who has supported us so far, the help does not go un noticed.

Have a wonderful school holidays and we look forward to seeing families returning and new families joining us in the New Year.

Sincerely
Sam Smedley
