Principal’s Report

Welcome to our newsletter. Thank you to everyone for your terrific work during Term 1. The teachers and students have had great success in creating an orderly working environment in the school. Student movement from place to place around the school during class time has been very impressive. Now to work on the running for recess breaks…

Many positive events have occurred during Term 1 with a couple still to go. Harmony Day was another success with the children participating in a large variety of activities plus the families and children’s participation in the Long Lunch. Jersey Day was a very successful fundraiser and it was interesting to see all the different teams around the world that the children support. The open night in Week 3 was well attended. It has been great to have several new faces attending the P & C meetings plus new faces at the School Board open night.

Still to come is the Year 6 camp, which is this Wednesday to Friday and the Values day on Friday 5th April.

Several items have been left at the school following the Harmony Day lunch. Please come and see the office if you have containers to collect.

Condolences to the Kennett Family

Last week the school learnt the sad news of the passing of Karen Kennett, one of our Librarians. Karen had been part of the Hampton Park school life since 2003, she began doing voluntary work at the school when her eldest child Blake was first enrolled. Although Karen became a member of staff in 2011 her work with the Scholastic Bookclub was still undertaken in her own time. Karen handed that role over to Robyn Richardson only this year.

Karen loved reading and was very enthusiastic about having children reading too. Her positive nature and will do attitude will be missed around the school. Karen’s funeral will be held this Thursday 4th April 1:30pm at Pinnaroo Cemetery with a large number of staff members attending. School will be open as usual with relief staff covering the absent staff members.

Assembly

Our last assembly held on 27th March uncovered some very talented actors in Room 3, lead by the terrific Director, Miss Owsiak. Congratulations to the following students who were awarded a merit certificate and/or a values certificate at the assembly. The next assembly is Wednesday 10th April with Room 4 hosting.

This assembly is also the opportunity to celebrate Easter, which this year occurs during the school holidays. The children have been making Easter hats in their classrooms as part of their Technology curriculum and will be parading them during the assembly, with prizes donated by the P & C going to the best design per class. All parents are welcome to attend.

ANZAC Day

As ANZAC Day also falls during the school holidays the school will be hosting an ANZAC Day ceremony the first week of Term 2 on Wednesday the 3rd May commencing at 9:00am, in the quadrangle. Students who attended uniformed services e.g. Scouts, Boys Brigade etc. are welcome to wear their uniform. We have several invited guests attending and participating in the service.

Scoliosis in Schoolgirls

All girls in Year 5 and 6 are recommended to participate in the National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis, as such all the girls have been given a Self-Detection Fact Sheet. The fact sheet can also be accessed directly from the Scoliosis Australia home page at the link below The website also contains comprehensive credible information about the symptoms and treatment of scoliosis.

http://www.scoliosis-australia.org/

Scoliosis (spinal curvature) is an important health problem in adolescent girls. Twenty-five girls per one thousand are at risk of developing a significant curve and three girls per thousand require active treatment (spinal brace or surgery). In the early stages the condition is most often asymptomatic so screening in the age range of 10 – 12 years is a sound preventative measure.

Room 4

Room 4 drew half portraits and joined them to a world map to show the diversity of backgrounds represented in the class. It was a visual reminder to show that we are all different but in our class we all fit together.

Room 3 Assembly

The students of Room 3 have been reading the delicious tale of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They have enjoyed reading and comparing this wonderful tale by Roald Dahl to the marvellous movie. The students did an outstanding job rehearsing for their assembly and put on a fantastic show!

Jersey Day

Thank you to all students for wearing jerseys last Thursday. We raised $292.45 towards the Year 6’s Graduation. Congratulations to Room 9 for winning the most students wearing a jersey.

Summer Carnival

A bright sunny, if not breezy day greeted the 2019 Summer Carnival competitors. Hampton's Flag Belt Rugby teams, T20 Bash teams, volleyball teams and Ultim8 teams arrived hungry, a steely glint in their eyes, resplendent in the red white and blue.....would it be a good day, the training effort suggested yes!!

Well it did turn out to be a great day for sporting pursuits, all of our teams performed very well and all involved had great fun.

Congratulations to our Flag Belt Rugby teams on their win. That makes 3 years in a row, Mr Ker take a bow! Managing 2 teams with enough kids to actually field 4 was not an easy task at all.

Mrs Donetta and Miss Owsiak took our volleyball teams to the brink of glory and the games I watched reinforced how much the teams have improved from training session 1 right up until the last game of the day.

Mrs Cunningham's 3 cricket teams got pipped at the post in the last game and ended up 2nd on count back, a great BIG THANKS to Mr Young who helped out by umpiring and coaching one of the teams.

The Ulitm8 speedball teams, coached beautifully by Miss Smith had a great time, played very well and I was most impressed by the sportsmanship displayed by our teams and in particular the leadership displayed by Levi, Nicolle and Shania. Thanks to the parents that came to cheer and support.

We look forward to the Eagles Cup season - weekly interschool games against Hillcrest, Noranda and Camboon (AFL, netball, soccer and basketball.) We have the Winter Carnival in Week 8 and swimming lessons Week 9 and 10 next term....busy busy busy busy SPORT SPORT SPORT, every week next term!!!

Mathematics Enrichment Classes

Curtin University is offering a Mathematics Enrichment Program for Years 5 - 11 students.

The main aim of the program is to increase the student’s interest in mathematics by engaging in activities that develop a sound mathematical understanding and enhance the mathematical problem-solving skills of the students. These skills are essential in preparing and equipping our students to the challenges they face in the modern technology focused economy. The program is suitable for a broad range of mathematically talented students and students will be issued with a certificate upon completion of the course.

The topics covered by the program are selected to complement the school curriculum and to challenge students with some non-standard problems. The course presenters are drawn from the WA mathematical community. The Course Director, Professor Lou Caccetta, is an outstanding mathematical scientist who is recognised nationally and internationally for his excellence in Teaching and Learning and Research and Development.

The classes are intended for able, but not necessarily brilliant, students. However, we point out that the program is not intended for weak students who need remedial studies.

The classes have been scheduled for 8 weeks in Term 2 (from Monday, 29 April 2019) and 8 weeks in Term 3 (from Monday, 22 July 2019). Places are limited and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Applications are available at the link below:

If you need any further information please see Ms Falco in Room 4.

Earn & Learn 2019

Hampton Park Primary is excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you.

From now until June 25th 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker sheet. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!

We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. If you have any questions, please ask at school.

Thanks for your time.

Please look up the new page, give us a Like and follow along for all official P&C matters and school reminders. The existing closed group page is still available, the name has been changed to “Hampton Park Primary Community Chat, Morley WA”, this can still be used for chats and questions amongst the community. Uniform Shop

IMPORTANT UNIFORM SHOP INFORMATION

There will be some changes to the operation of the Uniform Shop in 2019 to allow for better control of stock and ease of processing orders. Our uniform shop is run by a P&C volunteer, giving their time to provide a service to our school community. These changes will optimise the time and effort for everyone involved.

Effective immediately, the Uniform Shop will no longer open on a weekly basis, the Uniform Shop will open on the FIRST TUESDAY of each term, in the morning from 9am and in the afternoon from 3pm. Other than these times, ALL ORDERS must either be placed online via Flexischools, or order forms will be available from the Canteen for cash and EFTPOS sales. Once your order is completed, you will receive an SMS to advise you that the order is available for collection from the OFFICE. Orders will not be delivered to students or classrooms, they must be signed for on collection. It is very important that ALL ORDERS are completed with NAMES, ORDER DATE and a MOBILE PHONE number for SMS contact.

The office will have polo shirts in each size available for students to try on for sizing (other stock is true-to-size compared to most clothing brands). Any items ordered in the wrong size can be easily exchanged by contacting our Uniform Shop Coordinator, Gus Jeanne on 0415 426 023 or email gusjeanne@gmail.com. Hats will still be available to be purchased from the canteen.

All backorders for polo shirts are being processed presently and should be filled before the end of this term. The P&C appreciate your patience in this matter, we hope the changes we are implementing will prevent this from happening again in the future.

Helping Hands Update

We have been having a fantastic time at Helping Hands exploring our hospital/doctor dramatic play area. We had Joe from Lifetime EMT visit us and teach us some basic first aid and show us how to put someone in the recovery position. We have received some fantastic donations from parents and community that have enhanced the children’s learning and development if skills. The children are showing great interest in this area that we will be extending on it in future weeks.

We also had a visit from Nigel from the Salvation Army office. He spoke to the children about the work the Salvation Army does and how we can help. He also collected the care packages that the children made with the support of donations from the school community. We are still collecting toiletries and food items to donate to The Pantry/Food Bank run by the Salvation Army.

DID YOU KNOW! That the name SAO on the side of the Arnotts cracker packet stands for Salvation Army Officer! And it was put there by the Arnotts family in recognition of the part of their family who are Officers for the Salvation Army!

School holidays is fast approaching and we are in full swing preparing for the upcoming vacation care. Activities include Zone bowling, birds of prey incursion, karaoke party, karate/ninja day and a carnival day held at a sister school. Bookings are essential as numbers are set to increase in the upcoming weeks of term.

All bookings for before and after school as well as vacation care can be done via the Helping Hands Network website below if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us or call/text on 0428614999.
