Staff Changes

Mrs Rebecca Speldewinde is commencing Parental Leave at the end of this term. We wish Rebecca all the best. Mrs Speldewinde’s replacement for the remainder of this year is Mrs Michelle Avichzer, who has worked in the school before and comes to us highly recommended.

Mr Chris Toerien will be finishing this week as our Health teacher. We wish Chris all the best for the future.

Swimming

The swimming lessons have been well attended, thank you to everyone for your support. Special thanks to Mr Lee for his organisation of the lessons.

Telethon Kids Institute

Last Friday one of our students, Zyra Cox assisted the Premier, Hon Mark McGowan, MLA, by being the Master of Ceremonies at the official opening of the new Discovery Centre at the Perth Children’s Hospital. Zyra was very lucky to have this opportunity to speak with our state’s Premier. Zyra was also impressed by her meeting with Julia Bishop.

The Discovery Centre is located on the ground floor at the northern entrance of the Perth Children’s Hospital and is a fun and interactive space full of games designed to get kids, and adults alike, excited about science, health and research.

  • Explore the human body using an ultrasound, X-ray or MRI and discover what researchers are doing to find out more about body organs.
  • Get up close with our special microscopes, take a look inside the mouth, ear and skin and find out why our researchers are interested in snot, poo and dust mites.
  • Take a tour of the places we do research – in the lab, clinic and community.
  • See if you can defeat the cancer cells using immunotherapy or catch the allergens in the airway.

The Discovery Centre provides a unique experience for children aged 7 and up and you never know – the parents might learn something too!

Sausage Sizzle Thank You

We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to Dog Swamp Woolworths for donating sausages and Bakers Delight Noranda for donating buns for our recent Year 6 Fundraising lunch. A special mention to Mrs Cunningham, Miss Smith, Mrs Gardiner and Mr Baker for their wonderful help and to all the students who purchased a sausage sizzle. We raised $800 for the Year 6 Graduation, which is a huge effort and fantastic result.

Kindergarten Enrolments

We are now taking Kindy enrolments for 2020. The earlier we receive our enrolments the easier it makes it for the school to plan for class sizes and associated staffing. Enrolments for Kindergarten close on Friday 26th July. Once we have confirmed enrolments, the parents of new students will be invited to an event in Term 3 to meet staff and find out more about the school and the Kindy program.

Please spread the word to your friends and family in the area so we can be as prepared as possible for students starting their first year of school. To enrol, contact our friendly office staff or fill out the enrolment application form via our website.

Lote News

Before this semester draws to a close, we have some news of two interesting events to share with you.

Event 1 – Panda’s Picnic

On 18 June, 30 Year 5 students from Room 6 and Room 7, accompanied by Mrs O’Neill and me, took part in 2019 Pandas’ Picnic organised by CLTAWA (Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Western Australia). We were 1 of 10 schools that took part in the excursion at South Perth Community Hall.

A total of roughly 260 students, together with many teachers and helpers (including Miss Gong, our CI assistant), made the event a fun-filled and enjoyable educational experience for all. There were 4 tabloid activities. Wushu (Kungfu) demonstration cum Jianzi making, Beijing Opera Mask making, Paper panda folding and a Chopsticks game. Students were divided into groups based on the Chinese Zodiac Animal Calendar. They were also treated to two delightful dance performances by the girls in the MLC Dance Troupe. There were countless number of raffle tickets distributed with lots of prizes to be won for both group and individual efforts. Our students had the opportunity to practise their Mandarin as they interviewed and made new friends from the other schools.

After the day’s excursion, with the help of their class teachers, students filled in a Reflection sheet each to provide feedback of their experiences while they were still fresh in their minds. I have collated the responses and thought it would be valuable for you to read what they had to say about the excursion. Students unanimously wrote that they had enjoyed all the tabloid activities which were enriching and fun. They learnt new skills, using the chopsticks and new information like the meanings of the colours on the Beijing Opera Mask. They were truly entertained by the Chinese Martial Art performance as well as the Chinese dance performances.

Many students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to use Mandarin to make new friends as they participated in the icebreaker games and wrote answers in the “My New Friends” booklets. Many of them wanted to go again next year. One such example was Peter’s mother telling me how he had expressed his delight with the picnic and asked when he could go again! Peter has echoed the sentiments of many, if not all, of his classmates who attended the event. It was certainly a very positive, enriching, educational social activity. The students have also done the school proud with their impressive behaviour at the venue and on the bus. Everyone was respectful, cooperative and fully engaged when participating in the activities.

Here are some pictures of 2019 Pandas’ Picnic:

Event 2 – Chinese Cooking Fun

In the same week, on Monday 17th and Wednesday 19th, we did Chinese cooking in our Mandarin classes. We had stir-fried Hokkien noodles. We all had a great time. We learnt the Chinese terms for the ingredients, watching how the dish came together and finally getting to sample the finished product. I am delighted to report that from the youngest child to the oldest student in our school, most of them thoroughly enjoyed what they had that day. It was rewarding to see their excitement and positivity. For some who have never tried the dish or Chinese food, they were genuinely surprised that it was good.

It was a great cross-cultural culinary experience. They are looking forward to more cooking experiences on the proviso that they continue to work hard in Mandarin classes by putting in their best effort in their learning.

Here are a few pictures of C4 students enjoying their good fun time, eating noodles:

Empty Salsa Jars Needed

We are looking for donations of any short salsa jars like the picture below to store some paint. If you are able to help please bring the jars to your teacher.

Thank you
Mrs Firby
