Principal’s Report

Firstly, let me start by thanking the members of our community who have been so understanding regarding the need of the school to halt certain upcoming events. May I also say that I am writing this on Friday 20th March, so certain information might not be correct by the time you get to read the newsletter next Wednesday 25th March.

Adversity sometimes gives us cause to stop and rethink how or why we are doing certain tasks. The cancelling of assemblies as a mass gathering has allowed us to do just that.

This week’s assembly and those following, will still be seen by all the students, however the class that is running the assembly will be videoing the assembly in advance and then placing the video on our internal system. All classes will then log in at 8:50am on the Wednesday to watch the video.

As part of the video Mr Lee and I will be calling out the names of those students who are being presented with a Merit Certificate or Values Award. The certificates will then be given to the children in the room as they hear their name called out.

This is a wonderful way to turn a negative into a positive as the children learn new aspects of using technology. At this point in time we don’t have the equipment to do ‘live streaming’ but it is something we will be looking into for the future.

Community Health Nurse

We received advise from our Community Health Nurse last week regarding ways families can support their children during our current uncertain times. A timely reminder of caring for children’s well-being is attached to this newsletter.

COVID-19

There is a new section on our website under Student Welfare regarding regarding COVID–19. It gives you the link to the Department of Health’s website as it is their advice that the Department of Education is following. For some of our families you may find it easier to read information regarding COVID–19 in your first language.

Please see the link below for translated resources on COVID-19.

NAPLAN

As you are aware NAPLAN has been cancelled for 2020. Please be assured though that your child’s Teacher/s do continually do assessments with your child so that understanding is always being obtained regarding your child’s development.

Merit Certificates and Values Awards

Congratulations to the Certificate and Award winners at our last assembly.

Year 6 Camp - Dare Adventure Camp Dwellingup

The year 6 class headed into the unknown world of "Facing their Fears" and returned wiser, more confident and certainly very tired, or was that just the teachers!

First challenge for some would have been packing bags, too much, too little, "do I really need two pairs of shoes and five pairs of jocks?" Second challenge was to come later in the evening!

On arrival at Dare Adventure Camp the kids got to explore their surroundings before a lesson on "Natural Consequences" from Clayton, the Camp Owner. Rules in place and "Natural Consequences" of breaking them understood the mad rush for the best bunk began...who snores, who talks in their sleep, who had Baked Beans for breakfast!

The first activity was a day time bush walk and game of ambush - a challenge for some to follow rules, a challenge for others to hide in the bush, but, as competition took over most were able to hide in places they never would have chosen before. Do you know how many bugs live in the bush!

The groups rotated through four activities during the three days of camp. Rock Wall and Abseiling, Raft Building, Archery Tag (Dodge ball with Bows and Arrows!) and Kayaking. All designed to get the participants to leave their comfort zone and face some of those fears we may or may not have.

The most popular activity proved to be THE NIGHT WALK. All the students had to walk through the DARK forest trails, without a torch, without adults and without their fears! Teachers were strategically placed along the trails for, lets say, providing information on where to proceed to next. Well boy oh boy did some kids get to "Face some Fears" and the reactions were rich and varied but at the end of the activity the main collective voice was, "Can we do that again?"

Each day at meal times some other fears were faced. The fear of tea towels and wash cloths! Some revealed remarkable "survival skills in the art of dodging jobs".

Cutting a potentially long story short I will just say that the kids had great fun. Fears were faced, food was demolished, new skills were learned, leaders were revealed, kangaroos observed at close range, millions of night time stars contemplated, some kids eating habits incredulous, kayaks paddled, kayakers splashed, rafts built some even successfully, rock walls climbed and abseiled down, arrows dodged and Teachers were tired but had as much fun as the kids. That is really the measuring stick of a great camp...the fun and relationships forged between kids and staff. Hampton Year 6’s were fantastic and remain to be so.
