NAPLAN – Year Three and Year Five

Principal’s Report

Welcome back to Term Two. Wow, COVID-19 is that gift that just keeps on giving. Thankfully it was a short lockdown this time. At this stage the post lockdown restrictions are only in place until midnight on May 1st. However, I would urge all families to ensure that they follow the news carefully this week and next in case of changes. Currently parents are allowed on site to pick up and drop off children. We are asking, owing to confinement around classroom doors, that parents allow their children to walk up from the carpark or edge of the oval themselves. The Senior Health Officer is concerned by the large number of parents that congregate together on school sites, so please if onsite ensure that you follow the guidelines as follows;

  • wear a mask at all times
  • practice 1.5m between adults to ensure physical distancing
  • follow good hand and respiratory hygiene practices

Term Two

Term Two like all other terms is very busy. This year we have NAPLAN testing for our Years Three and Five students, in Weeks Four and Five. At the end of this term in Weeks Ten and Eleven we will have in-school swimming lessons held at Bayswater Waves. Unfortunately, with swimming lessons we don’t always get our first choice and this is the case this year. Further information will follow closer to the date.

P&C Meeting

The P&C meeting scheduled for Monday 3rd May will go ahead as planned in the new look timeslot of 2pm. Depending on the number of parents in attendance instead of the new board room we may have to use the undercover area to ensure physical distancing takes place. The P&C are still seeking to fill the position of secretary.

Unrequired Furniture

With moving to our new Administration building we have new furniture in our medical room and other locations. Consequently, there is a single bed frame and mattress that is no longer required by the school. If any family would like to make a small donation to the school for the bed they would be welcome to come and collect it. There is also two four drawer metal filing cabinets and two extremely long tables that are free to anyone that would like them. Please contact Administration if you are interested.

Devices at School

Under the devices in schools regulations, children are not permitted to have iphones, ipads etc at school during the day. The items need to be signed in at the office every morning and collected again to go home.

Recently we have had children wearing watches that are classified as devices. The watches have the capability of taking photos and videos, playing games and sending messages. If your child has such a watch it also needs to be signed in at the office daily.

Student Councillors

Congratulations to our Term Two Student Councillors. You have big shoes to fill but we are confident you will do a fantastic job.

Australian Early Development Census

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health

In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.

Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year One and developing class programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website:

Summer Carnival

After missing out last year due to a little inconvenience called Covid 19, the senior students were up and about and looking forward to representing the school at this year’s Summer Carnival which was held on Friday 26th March.

A new layout with six schools competing made this year's carnival a little different but provided many games to be played.

Considering our teams had a massive pre-season preparation of three practices due to camp, a student free day and a shortened term, I thought our kids played their chosen games very well and displayed our values tremendously well.

Congratulations to those in the Rugby League Tag and Cricket Blast who managed to win their divisions. Well done to all our kids on having a great day doing very little Talk 4 Writing, Science, Maths and only getting involved in important stuff like sport.

Thanks to the parents who came along to watch and thanks to the teachers who got a taste of all day sunshine whilst coaching and umpiring.

Term Two

We will be competing in the Eagles and Fever Cup Interschool Sport which will be played on Friday afternoons. AFL, Netball, Basketball and Soccer will be played against Noranda, Hillcrest and Camboon Primary Schools. If there are any parents wishing to assist with umpiring or coaching any of these sports, please see me ASAP.

We will also have the Winter Carnival against the six schools from the Summer Carnival in Week Nine for the Year Fives and Sixes.

In Weeks 10 and 11 we will be commencing Swimming Lessons at Bayswater Waves in the indoor heated pool. More information will be sent out later in the term.

Harmony Day

On Wednesday 24th March, our whole school celebrated Harmony Day. The children enjoyed a fantastic day with the sole purpose of celebrating and showing respect to the many different cultures present in our student body and local community. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘Everybody Belongs’ and it coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the elimination of racial discrimination.

The children began the day with an assembly including a whole school song, “Wanjoo” (A Noongar ‘Welcome to Country’ song), the Chinese Choir performed “My Friends” and a cultural dress parade by continents.

Rotational activities followed where the children got to visit four classrooms to learn about and participate in new and exciting activities from several different cultures. It was then a great joy for the school to be able to invite the parent body to join us in a long table lunch where we could relish the taste of other culture’s traditional foods.

It was a joyous day that was thoroughly enjoyed by all! Thank you to all the parents who came along and went to great lengths to share their culture with delicious food and beautiful traditional attire. We hope the excitement generated by the festivities will be a lasting memory for the children that prompts them to always remember that everybody belongs.

Zero Waste Lunch Challenge

Hampton Park Primary School will be holding a Zero Waste Lunch Challenge for the month of May. During this period, we ask that your child’s lunch contain as few items as possible that must be thrown away. Ideally, your child’s lunch will only contain items that will be eaten, composted or recycled.

Here are some tips on how to pack waste-free lunch;

  • Get children to help pack their lunches with healthy foods.
  • Use a reusable lunch bag/box for carrying a lunch.
  • Use a refillable bottle for drinks.
  • If you choose to use a single-serving container, please make sure it is recyclable.
  • Put sandwiches, muffins, etc. in reusable containers, instead of plastic bags. Label the containers with your child’s name so they have a better chance of coming home.
  • Avoid pre-packaged, single-serve portions of snacks.
  • Put re-usable cutlery in your child’s lunch box.
  • Prepare extra food at dinnertime and use the leftovers for lunches. Minimise the morning rush by packing lunches the night before and refrigerating overnight.

By participating, students will have a better understanding of how we can take action to reduce our waste. Waste-free lunches also save money, reduce litter around the school and promote healthy eating.

Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Hampton Park’s Zero Waste Lunch Challenge.
