Principal’s Report

Good morning Hampton Park community, thank you for taking the time to read our school newsletter. The students have all settled in to the new term very well. Thank you to everyone in the community for your recent support by wearing face masks and socially distancing. Please continue to keep 1.5m apart when on school grounds.

School Uniforms

During the change of season we often notice children not wearing the correct uniform. The school uniform policy was endorsed by the School Board in 2019 and remains unchanged. Please refer to the attached document if you are unsure of what is and what isn’t acceptable at school.

NAPLAN

The national testing in literacy and numeracy began this week. It does impact the Year Three and Year Five students in particular. Please remember that rest and a good nutritionally balanced diet is just as important as the tests are.

Education Department Awards

Each year the Education Department of Western Australia acknowledge the outstanding contribution that teachers, leaders and support staff make to the lives of students in Western Australia. School staff, school boards and parents are invited to submit nominations for one or more of the 13 categories. Nominations close Thursday 8th July 2021.

Nomination guides can be downloaded at the link below:

Survey

This term we will be conducting the School Survey. Traditionally the survey is conducted every second year, however last year’s was cancelled owing to the disruptions that were created with the COVID-19 virus. Parents, staff and senior students are invited to participate. The survey can be done online or paper copies can be generated as well. Please look out for further information in the next newsletter.

Walk Safely to School Day

This Friday 14th May children are encouraged to walk safely to school. This is a national campaign in its 22nd year. If you must use your car they recommend leaving it a good distance away and then walking the rest of the way to school. The Pedestrian Council of Australia would like to remind parents that until they’re ten, children must always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. Active Kids are Smarter Kids is their slogan this year. Further information can be found at the link below:

https://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD

If you do walk your child to school on Friday and would like them to have a peel on tattoo, please ask your child’s class teacher for one on Friday.

Kanyana Incursion – Early Childhood

On Tuesday, as part of our science curriculum, the Pre-Primary and Kindergarten students welcomed visitors from Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Kanyana rescue and care for sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife. Our three lovely human visitors brought some Australian wild animals including an echidna, a woylie, a tawny frogmouth, a blue-tongued lizard and a Stimson’s python. Chris, Jude and Sheila taught us all about these amazing creatures and students were able to see them up close and even touch some of them! The children were fascinated by this encounter and the visit generated lots of questions and discussion.

PP1 News

In Japan, Kodomo no hi, or "Children's Day," is celebrated every year on May 5. On this national holiday, children are respected and honoured for their individual strengths and happiness is wished upon them. On Kodomo no hi, Koinobori, or carp fish flags, are flown on poles outside of public buildings and private houses to bring luck and good fortune to the children inside. Koi fish, or Carp, are believed to be strong, spirited fish and are revered for their determination in fighting as they swim upstream and through powerful waterfalls. Koinobori symbolize the desire for children to become brave and strong individuals.

The students in PP1 made Koinobori and practiced showing strength, resilience and persistence.

Music News

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the planned ANZAC assembly had to be cancelled this year. We were however, able to share an in-house assembly to commemorate the day.

Firstly, the choir sang ‘Can You hear the Children Marching’. Their performance was excellent and many people commented on how well they sounded. Special mention must go to Riley Hinton and Emma Pustkuchen who both did a lovely job with their solos. As well as our whole-school military band rendition of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ we were treated with a performance by some of our school’s Kiwi students (Nazamia, Jarvana and Lj Takave, Te Hononga Henare, Kai Raby and Ayla Te Kiri) who sang the New Zealand National Anthem in both Maori and English. It was a truly moving performance. Parents, you should be so proud of the wonderful young musicians we are nurturing at Hampton Park. Fingers crossed our next performance will be for a wider audience.
