Principal’s Report
Cross Country Carnivals
Our Year Three to Six children have been very busy with our Faction Cross Country and the Interschool Cross Country. It was terrific to see lots of parents attending both carnivals. Thank you to Mr Lee for his organisation of these events. At the Interschool, Roxanna P came first in the Year Five girls race and Yulia S finished third in the Year Three girls race. Overall, the school finished in third position which is an improvement on last year’s placing. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Upcoming Events – Book Week
We have two big events in Week 6 this term. Firstly, Book Week. Book Week is held annually and is one of the main events for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). Recently published books are shortlisted each year and then voting takes place, with books being given a gold, silver or bronze in the different genre’s categories. Each year the CBCA has a theme for Book Week and this year’s theme is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. There will be many activities taking place around the school to celebrate. One that normally has all the children excited is dressing up as their favourite book character. Owing to the school photos being taken on the Wednesday this year the dress up day will be held on Friday 26 August.
Students who dress up will be given a raffle ticket by their teacher in the morning. Raffle tickets are to be taken to the Undercover Area. There will be a winner for K/PP, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. This will be drawn randomly and winners will receive a book prize. The Student Councillors will host the parade, The Karen Kennett ‘Love of Reading’ certificate will be presented and competition winners will be announced from all the competitions that will have been running throughout the week.
Upcoming Events – School Photos
Secondly, school photos. I have previously sent a Connect message explaining the school photos. On Tuesday 23 August the children from K1, PP to Year 6 will have class photos, individual photos and family photos taken. On Wednesday 24 August, K2, individuals for anyone who was away on the Tuesday and family photos for children from K2 will be taken. Children MUST wear their tricolour shirt for the photos. Year Sixes will need to wear the tricolour t-shirt but also bring their leavers shirt. Faction Captains and Vice Captains also need to bring their faction shirt with them. Special photos will be taken of the Student Councillors, the Faction Captains and Vice Captains. Children will need to wear their badge/badges on that day.
Arrival Times
I know it is very difficult to get out of bed on these cold wet winter days, but we do need to have children arriving at school on time. In Week 2 we had 97 children arrive at school late and in Week 3 we had 112. All of these children needed to visit the office to get a Late Note. This means the School Officers are interrupted in their work 112 times in the week and 112 children are embarrassed about walking into the classroom late. Part of schooling is preparing children for the future. I don’t think employers would tolerate their employees constantly being late. Children need to develop good habits now while they are young. Please give this some thought and maybe change your morning routine to ensure that children are breakfasted, dressed, school bag packed and ready for school in a timely manner.
School Uniforms
I understand with the current weather it is often difficult to get clothing dry in a timely manner, however we have noticed a notable decline in the number of children wearing school jackets and pants. It would be appreciated if the children could apply a greater effort at being in the correct school uniform. Often when I ask a child where his or her uniform is I get the reply of, “I couldn’t find it.” Perhaps laying out the clothes the night before would assist in this issue.
Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT’s)
The Education Department of WA is again giving free RAT’s out to all school aged children. Yesterday you should have received a Connect notice advising you to come in after school to collect a box of 20 nasal swab styled RAT’s from your child’s classroom teacher. If you would like some of the lollipop style that we gave away last time we still have those here that you can have in addition to the nasal swab tests. Please ask at the front office.

Cross Country Carnival – Year 3 to 6
Despite the best efforts and rain dances of some of the Year Three to Six students, the forecast wet weather stayed away long enough for us to complete our annual Faction Cross Country carnival.
Congratulations to those students who displayed our school values of resilience, persistence and respect to complete a distance race that can sometimes test fitness and courage to keep going. Thank you to the parents for braving the conditions to show your support to all our runners. Hopefully we will see you again at our Faction Carnival in Week 8.

Phys Ed News – Sporting Schools Athletics
Our Wednesday Phys Ed classes are learning some athletics techniques from Andrea, a qualified Athletics Australia coach. The students had a great time learning running skills at the last session. Hopefully the weather improves and we can get out into the jump pit for the next session.

Free Dress Day 2022
Next week, on Friday 19 August, the Year Sixes are fundraising with a Free Dress Day. If you want to dress up that day, you will need to bring a gold coin, though preferably a $2 coin to help the Year Sixes even more. It will be a great event! Make sure to wear your favourite outfits and make sure they are also suitable for school.

Garden News
Cluster 3 recently had a very successful harvest of the potatoes growing in the school garden! The students were lucky enough to take some home to cook into something delicious.

Library News – Returning Books
Thanks to Literacy Pro the students from years three to six are eagerly reading and trying to improve their level. Unfortunately, some of the books being borrowed are not being returned. We ask that all students bring their books back each week to either renew or borrow other books. We have such a great collection of books in our library, it is important that all students have an opportunity to access them.
