Principal’s Report
Last week, Ben Ker and I were fortunate to attend the Western Australian Primary Principal’s Association (WAPPA) annual conference held at Crown. We were privileged to hear from world renowned speakers and some fantastic home-grown ones as well. The theme for this year’s conference was Leaders as Learners and we certainly learnt a lot, now to put it into practise.
Special Awards
At this week’s assembly Mr Xavier Teo, Chairman of the School Board and I will be presenting two staff members with Making a Difference Awards. The first recipient is Mrs Fiona Cunningham, for her ability to build strong rapport and having contributed significantly to the academic and social advancement of students. The second recipient is Mrs Andrea Todd, for her commitment to the MultiLit program and the positive difference this work makes to the academic progress of the students. I would like to thank Mr Teo for his nominations of these two outstanding educators. The Making a Difference Award is an Education Department initiative for Shaping the Future of children. Any member of the school community can make a nomination or be nominated. You simply email to me who you would like nominated and the reason for the nomination in two sentences. I then email it to the Education Department, and they print out the awards. We have presented three awards previously to Mr Michael Lee, Mrs Allison Annett and Dr Adrian Rakimov.
We will be presenting two Random Acts of Kindness awards to two of our students who have been nominated by their respective teachers for the kind acts they have displayed to other students. This is always wonderful to hear about.
Finally, Chinese Speaking competition awards will be presented to two students who have excelled in a recent competition.
Athletics Carnival
We are all looking forward to this year’s athletics carnival. As you are no doubt aware the carnival is split over two days, with jumps and throws on Wednesday, plus the Year 1 and 2 cross country run. The main carnival is Friday, weather permitting.
On Friday, the P&C have arranged for the children to order a special lunch from the canteen and those orders need to be in by today. On Friday there will be three food trucks on the edge of the oval. A coffee van, a roast meats van and an ice-cream van for parents and spectators to enjoy. There will not be a cake stall this year so recess food will need to be sent to school with students.
The Kindergarten and Pre-Primary children do have races and tabloid games in the morning on Friday. They will go back to class following the completion of the tabloids. If your child is in K1 and does not attend Kindergarten on Fridays, please feel free to bring them to school so they can participate in their race too.
The Interschool athletics carnival is also split over two days, Monday 19 September for jumps, throws and middle-distance running events, and Wednesday 21 September for sprints and team games. Anzac Terrace Primary School is once again hosting the carnival for our association. Parents are more than welcome to attend.
Perth City Ballet
The children all enjoyed the Perth City Ballet’s production of Dance Proms 2022 on Tuesday afternoon. The dancing is promoting Act Belong Commit. Keeping active, having a sense of belonging and having a purpose in life are all good for our mental health and well-being. We not only feel happier, but we can cope better with problems and stress. Class Placement Policy
At the last Board meeting the members of the Board unanimously voted in a new classroom placement policy. The policy outlines the how and why of how students are placed into classes each year. It explains some of the mechanics behind how the process is carried out and the timing of when decisions are made. Although class construction does take place in Term Four the classes are not announced before the end of the year as sometimes events occur during the holidays that then require changes to a class structure. The new policy is attached to this newsletter for everyone to read. It will also be on the website where our other policies are placed.

Book Week
In Week 6 we celebrated another amazing Book Week! The week was filled with lots of fun activities for the students like a Kahoot quiz, teacher readings and an incursion by author Nadia L King. The students participated in competitions in the library as well as a token hunt throughout the school. We ended the week with a Dress Up day and Parade. All of the costumes looked amazing and the students loved walking down the catwalk! Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the week and for making it the best one yet!
