Principal’s Report

Welcome to Semester Two 2020, hopefully it will be healthier than Semester One 2020. While life was disturbed from Covid -19 for a while in WA we certainly have and hopefully will continue to manage the situation better than other locations around the world. Looking for the positives is always a useful exercise. Many of the teachers have told me that while it was frantic and busy changing how they delivered lessons, they learnt many new skills, which they are still using in their classrooms now. I wonder what else we will adapt and take from our past experiences in Semester One.

Late Arrivals

I would like to thank everyone who has changed their morning habits in order for their child/children to arrive at school on time. There was a notable improvement last week. Keep up the great work.

Phase Four

As I am sure you are all aware we are still operating in Phase Four. This means that we have to continue the restriction of parents on the school grounds. I’d like to thank all those parents who wait on the oval for their children or use the kiss and drive facilities and have respected not going to the classroom door. Your understanding and care is appreciated.

The return of School Assemblies won’t be quite how we anticipated last term. With the requirement for parents to still socially distance and being limited to the numbers on the grounds at any one time we need to change how and who attends school assemblies. For this reason, when a class is hosting the assembly I would like to invite one family member for each child from that class to the assembly. Also for children receiving a merit or value award the same would apply, one family member per child. This will allow enough space for the family member to socially distance around the outside of the assembly area.

Our first assembly in our new roster is the Student Councillors hosting the assembly. The new student councillors will be acknowledged at this assembly.

Semester Two Student Representatives

We had 19 Year Six students nominate for a Semester Two Student Councillor role. The students had to write their own speech during the holidays and present it to all the children from Year Four, Five and Six. The children were then required to vote for the Head Boy, Head Girl and six Student Councillors. All 19 candidates did very well with their speeches, showing poise, confidence and all used very persuasive arguments. Congratulations go to the following students for being voted in by their peers to the following positions.

Head Boy - Luca S

Head Girl - Madie S

Foodbank Donations:

One of our wonderful Year Five children, Eliana, was very concerned about the plight of homeless people and that of children not having enough food to eat. Eliana wanted to see what she could do to help and make a difference. The result being that we now have three wheelie bins at the school to receive donations from members of our school community who would like to assist Eliana in this wonderful cause. All donations need to be non-perishable food items.

The bins are a maroon in colour and have a Rotary sticker on the front. Please do not use them as a rubbish bin. The bins will be monitored by Eliana throughout the week and emptied when required. Eliana’s mother will take all donations to Foodbank for appropriate distribution.

I am very proud of the work Eliana is undertaking, it is great to see students at Hampton Park Primary reaching out to assist those less fortunate.

Shade Shelter

Please check out the new shade shelter on the steps of the school oval, if you haven’t already done so. It looks amazing. Many thanks to everyone who has donated to P & C fundraising activities, as some of the funds for the new shelter have come from the P & C.

The Federal Government had an initiative in 2018 for assisting communities to fund projects that benefitted the wider community. Thanks to Mr Patrick Gorman MP, Federal Member for Perth, for accepting our request for $10,000 through these grants. We were also successfull in our application for a grant from the Education Department through their Shade and Playground grant process. This gave us $22,250 towards the total cost.

New Administration Building

Work is well and truly underway for the construction of the new admin building. The slab was poured on Monday. The footings for the new playground have gone down. The builders tell us that they are currently ahead of schedule.

Cluster Five News

Cluster Five has used art to integrate their Talk4Writing and HASS to deepen their learning in these areas. Using pastels and paint to create an explosion of colour, they completed African Art Patterns and African Dolls. These were completed in place of Harmony Day 2020. Observational drawings of artefacts from our topic Past and Present were sketched in detail and these in fact resembled the actual objects. Directed drawing was a skill the students used to sketch Zelda the Cat from our Talk4Writing. The children were excited with their completed tasks and did exceptionally well during the term.
