Principal’s Report
Well done to all our Year Three and Five students who coped so well with the NAPLAN tests. While it is only one test and one time the results of the testing have major ramifications to schools. Thank you to Mr Ker for running the testing procedures so smoothly. Class teachers are currently in a very busy time as they complete assessments to determine grades for your child’s school report.
Eagles Cup
It was terrific to see the excitement of the children that represented our school last Friday in AFL football, netball, soccer and basketball. Well done everyone that took part.
School Enrolments
We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten in 2022 for children born between 1st July 2017 and 30th June 2018. There are application for enrolment forms available on our website, alternatively please visit one of our two very friendly and helpful School Officers in the administration office.
If your child is in Year Six this year then it is your responsibility to enrol your child into the high school that they will be attending. Most of our government high schools will have enrolment forms on their web page too.
School Survey
As mentioned in the last newsletter we are once again completing our School Survey forms. It is a requirement of the Department of Education Western Australia that the surveys are held every two years. Staff, parents and students (in the older classes) are asked to complete a short survey on the functions of the school and staff.
This is your chance to have a say on what you see as working or not within the school system. We do value your feedback and use your feedback as we go forward with our Business Plans, Operational Plans and our School Review.
It was one of the many pleasing aspects of the last school review to be able to provide the evidence of how many parents took part in the School Survey and the high level that the parents rated the school operations.
The survey will send a link to your email account for you to click on and complete the survey form. This is completely anonymous when it returns back. Alternatively, I will be sending the link via Connect at the beginning of next week. If you would prefer a paper copy please use the Connect notice to respond to me asking for a paper copy or come into the office to collect a copy. You can also use the school app to send a notification requesting a paper copy. The copy will be sent home with your child.
Head Lice
Every year we have the same issue with head lice. They appear to be more attracted to some than others, I believe the lice also prefer clean hair to walk in. Please ensure that regular checks are done on your child’s hair. Both the cooking oil and the conditioner methods are very popular ways of killing head lice.
10 Day Hair Conditioner Treatment Plan
Why does the treatment take 10 days?
Eggs generally hatch 7 to 10 days after being laid on the hair shaft (the part of your hair closest to the scalp). The 10-day treatment period helps break the reproductive cycle of the head lice. Even if only one or two adult lice are missed, they can lay about 6 eggs per day, and the cycle of outbreaks will continue.
Combing out new hatchlings every 1 to 2 days also means they cannot lay further eggs, which can happen about a week after hatching.
What do I need?
Any type of hair conditioner, including generic ‘home’ brands. Using white hair conditioner may make it easier to see the head lice.
A metal fine-tooth ‘nit comb’ (available from most pharmacies).
What do I do?
Apply plenty of hair conditioner to the dry hair until it is saturated.
Comb through with an ordinary comb or brush to remove tangles.
Section and comb the hair thoroughly with the nit comb in 4 directions – forwards, backwards, left and right.
Wipe the comb on a white paper towel to check that the dark adult lice or the paler hatchlings (young lice) are being removed. You may need to use a magnifying glass and a strong light to see the lice and eggs.
Continue combing the hair in sections until the whole head has been checked.
Some eggs will be removed by combing but you may need to use your fingernails to remove as many eggs as possible from the base of the hair shaft near the scalp. Hatchlings that emerge from missed eggs will be removed by combing with conditioner over the 10-day period. Only eggs within 1cm of the scalp will hatch. Eggs that have grown further out with the hair shaft will have already hatched or died.
When you have finished checking, rinse the conditioner out and dry the hair.
Repeat this process every 1 to 2 days over the 10-day treatment period. To save time during a school week, consider this combing schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday.
Check the waste material you comb out for adult head lice each day after combing. If any are found, this indicates a new outbreak and you will need to start again from day 1, as new eggs may have been laid by the adult lice.
Check for head lice once a week for at least 4 weeks after you complete the 10-day treatment. You may wish to do this on the weekend when you have more time. Applying plenty of hair conditioner makes combing easier and more effective.
Check all other household members for head lice and treat as necessary.

WA Education Awards
As previously mentioned the WA Education Awards have opened for 2021. These awards are a great way to celebrate achievements of the staff or school. There are two new categories this year – the WA Primary Deputy Principal of the year and the Secondary Deputy Principal of the Year.
This year to ensure all schools have the best chance to put forward their very best nominations the Department of Education is offering free writing assistance where a consultant would review your draft nomination and provide feedback. The department are also holding award information sessions, date to be confirmed. There is also a nomination guide available for loan from the front office. For further information on the assistance please go to

Staff Changes
We would like to wish Ms Erin McLaren all the very, very best for the future with her new little baby when it arrives in a few weeks. We can’t wait to find out if it is a boy or a girl.
Ms McLaren will be away for at least the next twelve months. While on leave Ms McLaren’s teaching role will be undertaken by Ms Rhian Schirripa. Ms Schirripa has worked at the school many times and we are very happy to welcome her to the school for the next 12 months teaching in K2.

Gardening Club
Gardening Club have been busy weeding, mulching, planting and watering. Mrs Cunningham has cleaned out the garden shed with some of the senior students, and it is looking very organised. Mrs Bowden has planted a lemon and lime tree and had many helpers weeding and mulching. Mrs Todd has done lots of work weeding our new native garden and we are looking forward to a bright and colourful garden in spring. Our next Gardening Club is on Wednesday 2nd June. Please meet in Cluster 3 after school.

Buddy Classes
This week we spent a session teaching our little buddies from Cluster 3 and Cluster 4 how to drive and program the Sphero robots. It was great fun and they were quick little learners. We even had a race with our Sphero’s to finish off the session!

Chaplaincy Service
Did you know that we have a Chaplaincy Service that is available to all our students?
What is a Chaplaincy Service, I hear you ask?
School Chaplains are in the prevention and rescue business. They help students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, stress and anxiety. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and those who just need a friend. All have a passion to improve the lives of young people.
“When you have a chaplain, you always know there’s a soft place for kids to fall,” said a school principal recently. “In fact, the chaplain supports everybody in the school community. The students have someone to go to, and the parents and staff also have someone to go to.”
If you would like more information about our School Chaplain please contact the school.
Absentee Notices
When notifying us of an absentee it is very important to supply a reason with your notification. If no reason is supplied you will receive a generic text asking for a reason so we have accurate information for our records. Thank you for your assistance with this.
